Band Information

DEFIANT MACHINES is an electropop venture from Germany/North Rhine Westphalia which was founded by Marco Heinemann and Ralf Colditz in September 2013. It all began in August of 2013 when Marco Heinemann (Ex-NOTOY & EXOPLANET) was on the lookout for a new singer and found Ralf Colditz (Ex-CYME IN BLOOM, THE LAST FLOOD & PHOBIA).
The two musicians had never met, but certainly knew each other by reputation and it quickly became quite evident that they were musically on the same wavelength. A month later they began working on their debut album, DISRUPTION OF THE CALM.
Marco is the composer and producer of the music while Ralf is the writer and the “voice” of DEFIANT MACHINES. The profound lyrics are based on real experiences and real adventures of real people. While Marco’s creative compositions are inspired especially by bands such as SKINNY PUPPY, FRONTLINE ASSEMBLY, HAUJOBB, DEPECHE MODE und, last but not least, KRAFTWERK, Ralf’s role models include the legendary bands DEPECHE MODE, THE CURE, THE MISSION, NINE INCH NAILS and PROJECT PITCHFORK.
This duo has created a colorful range of fascinating electronic sound waves with their first album DISRUPTION OF THE CALM, released late in june 2015. It begins with DISRUPTED, an atmospheric instrumental piece, followed by the EBM-like hit END OF THE LINE and a surprising cover version of VAST’s classic PRETTY WHEN YOU CRY. The rest of the album alternates between classic synthpop such as DOWNFALL or THE VISIT with the technoid PALTRY MAN or the dance-pop-like IMMACULATE DREAM. The album successfully ends with the slight melancholy midtempo-number DEPARTURE. There is something for everyone on this album. Ralf’s catchy and charismatic voice dominates the entire album. His voice, sometimes angry and sometimes gentle and compassionate, is always unmistakable.
The songs cover not only a wide range of classical emotions, but also crucial social and personal issues such as mobbing and the traumatic consequences thereof (THE VISIT), or constant dogmatism (TROUBLEMAKER). DEPARTURE concludes the band’s album, leaving us with hope for a better future. It’s about unburdening oneself and exploring new horizons.

After various appearences in scene magazines and on compilation CDs, the band is currently working on the second album.
